Analysis of the DeFi Index Market (DPI, BED)
DeFi Index Market Analysis (DPI, BED)
Transforming DeFi Investment Approaches
The decentralized finance (DeFi) sector has evolved from experimental protocols into a complex ecosystem with a multi-billion dollar market cap. For the modern trader

and investor, navigating this space involves dealing with extreme volatility and the need for deep technical analysis of every individual asset. In response to these challenges, the DeFi index market has emerged, allowing institutional and retail participants to gain exposure to the entire sector through a single token. Index products minimize project-specific risks and reduce the gas fees associated with manual portfolio rebalancing. Today, the leaders in this segment are products from Index Coop, specifically the DeFi Pulse Index (DPI) and the BED index, which represent two fundamentally different approaches to building a crypto portfolio.
DPI: The Benchmark of the Decentralized Sector
The DeFi Pulse Index (DPI) is rightfully considered the gold standard for those betting on the development of financial application infrastructure. It is a market-cap-weighted index that includes the most liquid and battle-tested governance tokens. Its composition features such giants as Uniswap, Aave, Maker, and Lido. The main goal of DPI is to provide the investor with pure DeFi exposure, excluding stablecoins and synthetic assets. The selection of assets in DPI is based on strict criteria: a project must have significant Total Value Locked (TVL), be fully decentralized, and possess high liquidity on decentralized exchanges (DEXs). This makes DPI an ideal tool for bulls expecting the DeFi sector to outperform the broader market.
Mechanics and Selection Criteria
The DPI methodology prevents questionable assets from entering the basket. Rebalancing occurs monthly, which allows the index to adapt to market shifts: the share of growing projects increases, while weakening protocols are gradually phased out. An important aspect is that DPI is a fully collateralized product. Each index token can be redeemed for the underlying assets via a smart contract. For a trader, this means zero counterparty risk and transparent collateralization. However, it is worth noting that high concentration in a single sector makes DPI vulnerable during periods of systemic liquidity crises in DeFi, when the correlation between assets within the sector tends toward one.
BED Index: A Balance of Three Elements
Unlike the highly specialized DPI, the BED (Bitcoin, Ethereum, DeFi) index offers a philosophy of passive longevity. Its structure is simple and effective: 33.3% weight is distributed equally between BTC, ETH, and the DPI index. This tool was developed in collaboration with the Bankless community and is aimed at investors who believe in the total market cap of the crypto space but do not want to miss out on the alpha generated by the DeFi sector. BED effectively smooths out volatility by including Bitcoin, which traditionally acts as a defensive asset within the cryptosphere. At the same time, the presence of Ethereum ensures participation in the growth of the largest smart contract platform, while the DPI component adds the necessary aggressiveness and high-yield potential to the portfolio.
Risk Management and Portfolio Efficiency
A comparative analysis of DPI and BED shows a significant difference in risk profiles. DPI has a higher beta coefficient, meaning it is prone to sharp movements in line with general investor sentiment in DeFi. BED, conversely, demonstrates more stable performance during periods of market uncertainty. From a capital management perspective, using indices helps avoid survivor bias, where an investor bets on a single project that eventually loses market share.
