Cluster Analysis Trading Strategy

Internal Mechanics of Market Processes

Modern trading requires market participants not only to read charts but to understand the underlying causes of price movement. Traditional technical analysis, which operate

s using bars or Japanese candlesticks, hides the most important aspect: the struggle between buyers and sellers within each time interval. The cluster analysis strategy, often referred to as footprint trading, solves this problem by providing the trader with an X-ray of each candle. Instead of abstract opening and closing prices, we see the distribution of executed orders at each price level. This allows for the identification of zones of maximum interest from whales and helps to spot demand and supply imbalances that precede impulsive moves.

Structure and Reading the Footprint Chart

A cluster is a digital visualization of the volume traded at a specific price. In its classic form, the footprint displays Bid and Ask values—market sells and buys. By reading this data, a trader sees not just price movement, but the aggressiveness of participants. If high volumes pass on the right side of the cluster (Ask), it signals activity from buyers ready to sweep liquidity at the market. Conversely, high values on the left (Bid) indicate selling pressure. The key advantage here is the ability to see trapped traders: situations where the price attempts to break a level, huge volumes are recorded in the clusters, but there is no progress in movement. This is a direct sign of a limit player absorbing market force.

Key Delta and Volume Metrics

For effective strategy implementation, one must utilize the concepts of POC (Point of Control) and Delta. POC is the price level within a candle where the maximum volume was recorded. It serves as a short-term support or resistance level. If the POC shifts upward from candle to candle, we are observing a healthy uptrend. Delta shows the difference between market buys and sells. A positive delta indicates buyer dominance, while a negative delta indicates seller dominance. The analyst pays special attention to divergences: when the price hits a new local high but the delta shows a sharp decline or becomes negative. This is a sure sign of trend exhaustion and a likely reversal, as aggressive buying has ceased and the market has met significant limit resistance.

Patterns of Aggression and Absorption

Trading signals in cluster analysis are built on finding anomalies. One of the strongest signals is a stacked imbalance, a situation where buying volume exceeds selling volume by 3-4 times across several consecutive price levels. This indicates a powerful institutional impulse. Another important pattern is stopping volume in the wick of a candle. When a large cluster forms at the extreme of the wick and the price closes deep within the body, it indicates a climax of buying or selling and profit-taking by smart money. At such moments, the probability of a pullback is at its highest. A trader using cluster analysis does not enter a trade based on moving average crossovers, but at the moment of confirmed price reaction to injected volume.

Context Synergy and Risk Management

Cluster analysis is most effective when combined with horizontal volume levels and Market Profile. The strategy involves looking for confirmation at significant zones: if the price approaches a strong support level and large buy volume appears in the clusters despite a negative delta, we are witnessing the absorption of sells. This is an ideal entry point for a long position with a minimal stop-loss.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
