The Core of Momentum Trading

The Momentum Candles strategy is based on understanding market mechanics: significant price moves rarely happen by accident. A momentum candle is the visual embodiment of an aggressive imbalance between supply and dema

nd. When a full-bodied candle appears on the chart, significantly outclassing previous ones in size, it signals that a big player has entered the market or that a chain reaction of stop-loss liquidations has occurred. A professional trader views this pattern not as a completed move, but as confirmation of the direction in which the market will move by inertia. The essence of the strategy is to ride this powerful flow, minimizing time in the position and maximizing the expected value of profit. Unlike counter-trend tactics, we work in harmony with the dominant force, which significantly increases the win rate of every individual trade.

Volume as Trend Fuel

Momentum trading is impossible without analyzing vertical volume. If the price covers a significant distance but the volume remains at an average level or drops, we are dealing with a hollow move or a liquidity trap. A true impulse is always confirmed by an anomalous volume spike. This is the fuel that proves the move is backed by the real money of institutional investors. Within this strategy, it is recommended to use the Relative Volume (RVOL) indicator. A signal to act is a candle whose volume is at least twice the average of the last 20 periods. High volume combined with a wide candle range indicates that resistance in the price’s path has been fully absorbed, and the path to the next liquidity levels is open. Without volume confirmation, any momentum is considered a fakeout until proven otherwise.

Criteria for the Ideal Candle

To successfully implement the strategy, you must learn to filter out market noise. The ideal momentum candle must meet several strict criteria. First, its body must constitute at least 80% of the entire range (from high to low), which indicates an absence of serious resistance. Shadows (wicks) should be minimal, especially on the closing side. Second, the candle size must exceed the Average True Range (ATR) for the selected period by at least 1.5–2 times. We are not looking for just any growing bar, but a structural break or an engulfing pattern. It is important that the momentum occurs at key points: when exiting a prolonged consolidation, breaking an all-time high, or breaching a significant support/resistance level. These are exactly the candles that open opportunities for quick profit, as they force market participants on the opposite side to close losing positions en masse.

Trade Entry Algorithm

Position entry is performed only after the signal candle closes. This is a critical rule that saves the trader from entering into a wick, where the price sharply pulls back before the bar finishes forming. There are two main entry methods. The conservative method involves placing a limit order at the 50% retracement level of the momentum candle’s body. This allows for a better risk-to-reward ratio but carries the risk of missing the trade if the move turns out to be too strong. The aggressive method involves entering with a market order immediately after the candle closes or on a break of its extreme on the next bar. For M15 and H1 timeframes, the optimal entry is on the break of the high (for longs) or the low (for shorts) of the momentum bar. It is important to monitor that the next candle does not immediately engulf the momentum, which would indicate a false move and weakness from the initiator.

Setting Protective Orders

Competent risk management is the foundation of the Momentum Candles strategy.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
