How to Read Charts: A Basic Course for Beginners

In the world of trading, a chart is not just a set of colorful lines and figures, but a visual embodiment of market psychology. For a professional analyst, every bar or candle reflects the consensu

s of thousands of market participants regarding an asset’s value at any given moment. Understanding how to interpret this data is a fundamental skill; without it, any trading strategy turns into pure gambling. A chart accumulates absolutely everything: macroeconomic indicators, political events, the expectations of whales, and the emotional state of the crowd.

Popular Types of Market Data Visualization

There are several primary ways to visualize price. A line chart is built solely based on the closing points of time periods, providing a clean and clear view of an asset’s long-term trajectory. However, it hides important details that occurred within the trading session. Professionals prefer Japanese candlesticks or bars. A candlestick chart provides four key parameters at once: the open price, the close price, and the price extremes—the high and the low. This allows a trader to instantly assess an instrument’s volatility and understand who dominated during the chosen interval—buyers (bulls) or sellers (bears).

Understanding Candlestick Structure

Each Japanese candlestick consists of a body and shadows, also called wicks. The body displays the range between the open and the close of the period. If an asset has appreciated during that time, the candle is typically green or white; if it has depreciated, it is red or black. Long shadows indicate zones where the price met strong resistance. For example, a long upper wick with a small body signals that buyers tried to actively push the market up, but by the end of the period, sellers regained full control. Skillful analysis of the combinations and shapes of such candles helps in predicting potential market reversals or confirming the strength of the current move.

Determining the Market Trend

The market never moves in a perfectly straight line. Its path consists of wave-like impulses and corrections. An uptrend is characterized by a sequential renewal of local highs and lows (each subsequent peak is higher than the previous one). A downtrend, conversely, is defined by a series of consistently lower extremes. If the price is trapped in a narrow horizontal range and cannot break its peaks, the market is in a phase of consolidation or accumulation. The most important rule for a beginner trader: trade primarily in the direction of the dominant trend, as this significantly increases the mathematical expectation of profit and lowers the risk of sudden losses.

Key Support and Resistance Levels

Price levels are invisible psychological barriers where the balance of power between buyers and sellers changes drastically. Support acts as a floor where buying interest from market participants increases enough to stop a price decline. Resistance is a ceiling where supply begins to significantly exceed demand, limiting further growth of the asset. A breakout of such a level is often accompanied by a sharp impulse, as stop-loss orders are triggered and new large positions are opened. After a confident breakout, a level often flips its function: former resistance turns into new, reliable support.

The Role of Timeframes in Trading Analysis

A timeframe is the chosen time scale of a chart, where one candle corresponds to a specific period: from a minute to a month. To objectively assess the global market picture, professional analysts use daily (D1) or weekly (W1) charts.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
