How to Apply the Money Flow Index (MFI) in Swing Trading

Swing trading is based on identifying medium-term price swings that last from several days to several weeks. A trader’s main objective in this style is to timely recognize the moment when t

he current momentum fades and a new wave begins to form. One of the most effective tools for this task is the Money Flow Index (MFI). This oscillator is often called a “volume-weighted RSI” because it analyzes not only price changes but also trading intensity, which is critical for understanding the true strength of a market movement.

The Essence of the Money Flow Index

MFI measures the rate at which money is flowing into or out of an asset. The algorithm is based on the concept of “typical price” and the calculation of positive or negative money flow. If today’s typical price is higher than yesterday’s, the flow is considered positive; if lower, it is negative. By summing these values over a specific period (usually 14 candles), the indicator converts them into an oscillator that moves within a range of 0 to 100. For a swing trader, this means the ability to see not just the price chart, but the hidden activity of whales and institutional players, which often precedes a price reversal.

Differences Between MFI and Classic RSI

The key advantage of MFI over the popular RSI lies in its integration of volume. In swing trading, false breakouts or prolonged trends on low volume often occur, which RSI might interpret as strength. MFI remains more objective in such situations: if the price is rising but volume is falling, the Money Flow Index will not show significant growth, signaling weakness in the bulls. This allows the trader to avoid entering positions at the tail end of a move and focus on trades with high profit potential and confirmed market interest.

Configuring the Indicator for Swing Trading

For work on H4 or Daily timeframes, the standard period of 14 is optimal. It provides a balance between sensitivity to market noise and signal accuracy. However, experienced analysts often adjust the extreme levels. Instead of the classic 20 and 80, it is sometimes advisable to use levels of 10 and 90 during periods of high volatility to filter out weak signals. In swing trading, it is important to catch a deep correction, so narrowing the overbought and oversold zones helps find the most significant entry points where the probability of a bounce is maximal.

Finding Reversal Points via Oversold Conditions

The primary strategy for using MFI in swing trading involves buying an asset when the indicator exits the oversold zone (below 20). When the indicator line drops into this extreme zone, it indicates that selling has reached its peak and bearish pressure is exhausting. For a swing trader, the signal to open a long position is the moment the MFI crosses the 20 level from bottom to top. This confirms that smart money has started buying the asset, and a new bullish wave is forming. Similarly, an exit from the zone above 80 downwards serves as a signal to close positions or open a short.

Divergence as a Leading Signal

The most powerful MFI signal in a professional’s arsenal is divergence — the discrepancy between the price chart and the indicator line. If the asset price hits a local high, but the peak on the MFI chart is lower than the previous one, this is a classic bearish divergence. It indicates that the new price surge is not supported by actual capital inflow. In swing trading, such signals often anticipate a medium-term trend reversal several days in advance, allowing the trader to exit the market at the best prices even before mass sell-offs begin.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
