Intraday Reversal Strategy via Pivot Points and ATR

Synergy of Levels and Volatility

Intraday trading requires a trader to combine high-precision entries with strict risk management. The strategy based on Pivot Points and the Average True Range

(ATR) indicator represents a classic analytical approach that combines static price levels with volatility dynamics. The core logic of this method is to identify trend exhaustion zones where the probability of a correction or a full-scale reversal is at its highest. Unlike trend-following strategies, this approach focuses on counter-trend impulses that occur when the market is overbought or oversold relative to its average daily range.

System Tools and Parameters

Two key technical indicators are used to implement the strategy. The first is Pivot levels calculated using the standard formula (Floor Pivots) based on the previous trading day’s data. We are particularly interested in support levels S2, S3 and resistance levels R2, R3, as deep reversals occur most frequently at these points. The second tool is the ATR with a period of 14, set on the daily timeframe (D1) to determine the price’s “potential range,” and on the trading timeframe (M15 or H1) to filter out market noise. Combining these tools allows a trader not only to see the levels but to understand whether the market has enough energy to break through them or if the momentum has faded.

Mechanics of Identifying Reversal Points

A signal for action is formed when the price reaches critical R2/R3 or S2/S3 zones. Statistically, the price rarely stays beyond the R2 or S2 levels for more than 10-15% of the trading session. However, a touch of the level is not enough. A professional entry occurs when the price not only touches the calculated level but also shows signs of deceleration. We look for Price Action patterns such as pin bars, engulfing, or false breakouts. It is important that this happens when the current daily price movement has approached 80-100% of the average daily ATR. This confirms the hypothesis that buyers or sellers have run out of fuel for further movement.

Filtering Signals via ATR

In this strategy, the ATR indicator acts as a filter for market “overheating.” If the price approaches resistance level R2 but has only covered 30% of its average daily range, the probability of a genuine breakout and trend continuation is extremely high. In such a case, a reversal trade would be premature and dangerous. Conversely, if the price reaches R2 having already covered 110% of its average range (ATR D1), the probability that the current impulse will turn into a pullback increases to 75-80%. It is this mathematical overextension of the asset that creates ideal conditions for opening a position against the day’s main move, with the target being a return to the central Pivot Point (PP).

Setting Stop-Loss and Take-Profit

Sound risk management is the foundation of this strategy. The stop-loss is placed beyond the reversal pattern but with a mandatory adjustment for current volatility. The optimal distance for a protective order is 0.2–0.3 of the current ATR value (on the trading TF). This allows for avoiding stop-outs caused by random market spikes. The take-profit is split into two parts: the first target is locked in at the S1/R1 level (the nearest intermediate level), and the main part of the position is closed upon reaching the central Pivot Point (PP). This distribution allows for moving the trade to break-even after the first impulse and maximizing profit during a full price reversion to the mean.

Professional Nuances of Implementation

To increase the strategy’s effectiveness, it is important to consider the timing of the trading session.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
