support and resistance levels often become liquidity sweeps, while true reversal points are hidden within so-called Order Blocks. An Order Block (OB) is not merely the last bullish or bearish candle before an impulsive move; it is the footprint of smart money, a zone where significant absorption of opposing orders occurred. However, numerous such zones form on the chart, and not every one of them can stop price action. The key filter that separates true institutional activity from market noise is the presence of an imbalance, or Fair Value Gap (FVG). The synergy of Order Block plus Imbalance forms one of the highest-probability entry setups, which professional analysts refer to as an Imbalance OB.

Identifying a Quality Order Block

To identify a valid order block, one must analyze not only the candle itself but also the subsequent market reaction. A quality OB must possess several characteristics. First, it should form after a Stop Hunt of previous local highs or lows. This signals that a large player has built a position at the expense of other participants’ stop-losses. Second, the block formation must be followed by a sharp, aggressive move in the opposite direction, accompanied by a Break of Structure (BOS). But the most important element remains what happens in the first moments after the price exits the candle range. If the move is so swift that the market does not have time to cover all price levels, a liquidity gap—an imbalance—occurs. The presence of this void confirms that unfulfilled interest remains in the block, and the price is highly likely to return to this zone for mitigation and to finish filling positions.

Synergy of the Block and Price Gap

The Imbalance OB concept is built on the principle of market efficiency. An imbalance (FVG) represents a price range where quotes moved in only one direction, leaving inefficiency between the highs of the first and the lows of the third candle in a three-candle formation. When such a gap occurs immediately after an order block, it acts as a magnet for price. The market tends to fill the void to restore the balance of supply and demand. For a trader, this serves as confirmation that the impulse was so strong that the institutional player did not manage to execute all their orders. The return of price to the block through the filling of an imbalance is called rebalancing. In this case, an Imbalance OB acts not just as a level, but as a high-probability bounce zone, since institutions are interested in protecting their positions at the exact point where the aggressive move began. Without an imbalance, an order block is considered weak, as the price may have already tested it during its formation.

Entry Point Algorithm

When using an Imbalance OB in a trading strategy, a trader must adhere to a clear algorithm. First, determine the context on the Higher Timeframe (HTF). If the global trend is bullish, look for a Bullish Imbalance OB. Once a suitable zone is identified on the working timeframe, wait for the price to return. Entry into a trade can be executed in two ways. The first is aggressive, by placing a limit order at the start of the imbalance or at the proximal boundary of the order block. The second is conservative, where the trader waits for a shift to a Lower Timeframe (LTF) and looks for confirmation in the form of a market structure break inside the Point of Interest (POI).
