Polarized Fractal Efficiency (PFE) Indicator

The Concept of Efficiency in Price Action

Most classic oscillators focus exclusively on the rate of price change or its position relative to a historical range. However, the Polarized Fractal Efficien

cy (PFE) indicator, developed by Hans Hannula in 1994, offers a fundamentally different view of market dynamics. At its core lies the use of fractal geometry to assess how efficiently price is moving. Efficiency here is defined as the shortest path between two points. If price moves in a straight line, efficiency is at its maximum. If the path is marked by chaotic oscillations and deep pullbacks, efficiency trends toward zero. This tool allows a trader not just to see the direction of movement, but to understand the internal structure of the trend, distinguishing true directional momentum from market noise.

Calculation Mechanics and Mathematical Model

The PFE algorithm is based on the Pythagorean theorem and the principles of fractal dimension. To calculate it, a specific period is taken, for example, 10 bars. First, the direct distance is calculated — the hypotenuse between the closing price of the current bar and the closing price N periods ago. Then, the actual distance is calculated, which is the sum of all individual segments of price movement (vector lengths) within that period. The final indicator value is obtained by dividing the direct distance by the actual one. After that, an exponential smoothing procedure is applied, and the result is scaled in a range from -100 to +100. Positive values indicate upward efficiency (bullish trend), and negative values indicate downward efficiency (bearish trend).

Interpreting Indicator Signals

A key feature of PFE is its scale. The central “0” line acts as a watershed: being above zero confirms a buyer’s edge, while being below indicates a seller’s advantage. However, the most critical levels are +50 and -50. When the PFE line crosses the +50 level from bottom to top, it signals the formation of a strong, energy-efficient uptrend. Similarly, a breakdown of the -50 level from top to bottom indicates powerful bearish momentum. If the indicator fluctuates in a narrow range around the zero mark, it is a sure sign of market inefficiency, prolonged consolidation, or a lack of clear interest from whales. During such times, traders are advised to refrain from entering trend-following positions.

Trend Dynamics and Market Phases

PFE excels at identifying the maturity of a move. Maximum values near +100 or -100 are rarely reached and signify extreme efficiency, which often precedes a trend climax. When the indicator begins to turn from these extreme levels back toward the zero mark, it does not necessarily mean a trend reversal, but it clearly signals a loss of efficiency. The trend becomes choppy, volatility rises, and the risk of a deep correction increases. Professional analysts use this signal to take partial profits or move stop-losses to breakeven. A decline in fractal efficiency is an early warning sign that appears long before price forms a reversal pattern on the chart.

Finding Entry and Exit Points

An effective trading strategy using PFE involves entering a position during the onset of directional movement. The optimal moment to go long is when the indicator line crosses the zero level from bottom to top, heading toward the +50 zone. If the PFE is already above +50 but starts to curl downward, it is considered a signal to close long positions.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
