Pump and Dump Patterns: Technical Indicators of an Imminent Price Crash

Pump and Dump schemes remain a dangerous trap in financial markets. Recognizing the approach of the dump phase is a crucial task for any trader looking to preserve capital. Al

though manipulators carefully mask their actions, characteristic traces of their activity are reflected in the charts. Technical analysis allows for the identification of indicators of an impending trend reversal before the avalanche of sell orders wipes out liquidity.

Abnormal trading volume growth

The primary signal of an artificial pump is a sharp spike in trading activity without fundamental reasons. At the initial stage, trading volumes can increase tenfold compared to average values. A key indicator of an imminent crash is the divergence between price and volume at the peak of the upward move. If the price makes a local high while volumes begin to noticeably decline (impulse exhaustion), it indicates a weakening of buying demand. The scheme organizers stop supporting the price with artificial buys and prepare to take profits.

Overbought signals and divergence

Standard oscillators, such as the Relative Strength Index (RSI), quickly enter the extreme overbought zone (above 80 or 90 points) during a pump phase. Overbought conditions alone do not guarantee an immediate reversal, but the appearance of bearish divergence serves as a serious warning. When the price chart forms a new, higher high while the RSI line shows a lower peak, it points to a loss of upward momentum. Such a discrepancy often foreshadows a drop, as the market lacks the resources to sustain the asset’s inflated value.

Specific candlestick patterns

Price behavior before a dump is often characterized by the formation of reversal patterns. One of the most indicative signals is the appearance of candles with long upper wicks and small bodies, such as the shooting star or the gravestone doji. These patterns form when buyers attempt to push the price higher but face aggressive selling that returns the price to the open level. If such candles are accompanied by high volume, it means that large players have begun actively distributing their positions to retail investors.

Order book deformation

Analyzing the order book and the trade feed provides an opportunity to identify manipulation in real time. During a pump, organizers place large limit buy orders (buy walls) to encourage retail traders to open longs. Right before the dump begins, these support orders suddenly disappear or are instantly filled by the manipulators’ own sell orders. Simultaneously, large market sell orders begin to dominate the trade feed, while purchases are made in small increments. This is a sign that smart money is hastily exiting the asset.

Capital protection strategy

To minimize risks, traders must follow strict risk management rules. Entering a trade when the price has already surged by hundreds of percent carries colossal risk. If a position is open, it is advisable to use trailing stop-losses or take profits in parts as the price rises. Understanding the technical markers of distribution helps to identify the preparation for a dump in time and exit the market before liquidity completely dries up and the price returns to its initial values.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
