Moving Average Pullback Scalping Strategy

Fundamental logic of pullback trading

Scalping is a high-frequency trading method that demands extreme concentration and a rigid algorithmic approach. The pullback strategy to moving averages is based on

the postulate that price always tends to revert to its weighted mean value. Moving Averages (MA) act as dynamic levels of support and resistance. When the market is in a clear trend, price makes impulsive moves, inevitably followed by a correction phase or a market breath. This moment of reversion to the mean line serves as the ideal entry point with minimal risk. A scalper does not try to predict a global reversal; instead, they capture short moves in the direction of the primary trend, leveraging market momentum.

Technical workspace configuration

To execute this strategy effectively, you must configure your trading terminal correctly. The primary working timeframes are M1 and M5, as they allow you to observe the microstructure of price action. Apply two Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) to the chart. EMA is preferred because it reacts faster to recent price changes, which is critical for scalping. Typically, periods of 9 (fast) and 21 (slow) are used. The 9-period EMA acts as the entry trigger, while the 21 EMA serves as the primary trend filter and the deep pullback zone. Additionally, it is recommended to use volume indicators or a stochastic oscillator to confirm overbought and oversold zones during touches of the moving averages, which significantly improves the mathematical expectancy of the trade.

Algorithm for opening a trading position

Trading begins by identifying the dominant trend. If the price is above both moving averages, and the lines are angled upward without crossing, we only look for buy setups. The signal to act is a corrective move downward toward the 9 or 21 EMA line. An ideal setup forms when the price touches the mean line but does not close below it. At this point, wait for a confirming Price Action pattern, such as a pin bar or a bullish engulfing candle. Enter the position upon the breakout of the high of the signal candle that touched the average. If we observe a downtrend (price below the EMA), the algorithm is mirrored: wait for a bounce upward toward the moving average and open a short position when signs of buyer weakness emerge.

Money management and profit taking

In scalping, money management is more important than the entry point itself. Due to high trade frequency, risk per operation should not exceed 0.5–1 percent of the deposit. Set the stop loss behind the local extremum or directly behind the moving average with a small buffer. Usually, this is a very tight distance in pips, allowing for a larger position size. Take profit often occurs upon reaching a risk/reward ratio of 1:2 or when the price hits the nearest local level. Many professional scalpers prefer closing part of the position upon the first impulse and moving the remainder to breakeven. The main goal is to avoid letting a winning trade turn into a losing one, as market noise on small timeframes can change the picture in an instant.

Signal filtering and market context

Not every pullback to a moving average is tradeable. An experienced analyst always evaluates the slope of the MA: if the lines are horizontal (flat), the pullback strategy stops working and begins generating false signals. In such moments, the price chops through the averages, and their significance is lost. Also, avoid trading during the release of major economic news, when volatility spikes and spreads widen.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
