Mitigation Block: Basics

The Mitigation Block concept is a key element in the Smart Money Concepts (SMC) methodology, offering traders a unique approach to understanding and predicting price action. This block forms after the price fails to create

a new high or low, violating the expected market structure. Instead of continuing in the initial direction, the price reverses, creating an area that Smart Money traders use to find entry points. A Mitigation Block represents the last candle of an upward movement before a downward market structure break, or the last candle of a downward movement before an upward break. It signals that institutional players may be mitigating their losing positions by using the liquidity left at previous levels.

Identifying a Mitigation Block

To use a Mitigation Block effectively, you need to clearly identify it. Let us consider an example of a bullish Mitigation Block. It forms after the price, moving upward, fails to run the previous high and instead breaks the previous low, changing the market structure to bearish. The last bullish candle before this downward break will be the bullish Mitigation Block. For a bearish Mitigation Block, the situation is reversed: the price, moving downward, fails to run the previous low and breaks the previous high, changing the structure to bullish. The last bearish candle before this upward break is the bearish Mitigation Block. It is crucial to consider the market context: the presence of a Change of Character (CHoCH) or a Break of Structure (BOS) on a higher timeframe.

Difference from an Order Block

Although Mitigation Blocks and Order Blocks are both areas of interest for SMC traders, their functions and formation logic differ. An Order Block is the last candle before an impulsive move that breaks market structure and creates an imbalance. It points to the area where institutional players made significant buys or sells, accumulating positions. A Mitigation Block, in contrast, forms after the price fails to continue the trend and breaks the structure. It points to a zone where major players might be trying to exit their losing positions or reduce risks. A Mitigation Block is often used for entries in the direction of the new trend, whereas an Order Block can be used for both trend continuation and reversals.

Trading Strategies with Mitigation Blocks

Using a Mitigation Block in a trading strategy typically involves waiting for the price to return to this zone after a market structure break. Once the Mitigation Block is formed and the new trend direction is confirmed, traders expect the price to retrace into the range of this block, allowing institutional players to mitigate their previously opened positions. This creates an ideal opportunity for traders to enter the market in the direction of the new trend. Entry is usually executed when the price touches the 50% level of the Mitigation Block or its boundary, with a stop loss placed beyond its limit. Take profit can be set at the nearest liquidity levels or key highs and lows.

Application Across Different Timeframes

The Mitigation Block concept is applicable across all timeframes, from intraday to long-term. However, like any SMC tool, its efficiency increases when used in combination with multi-timeframe analysis. For example, a Mitigation Block formed on a higher timeframe (such as 4H or Daily) will carry more weight and provide more reliable entry points than blocks on lower timeframes (15M or 5M). Traders often use higher timeframes to determine the overall trend direction and key areas of interest, while using lower timeframes for precise entries and exits.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
