The Fair Value Concept via POC

The Nature of Market Equilibrium

The market is, first and foremost, a price discovery mechanism where the interests of buyers and sellers intersect at a point of maximum consensus. Within the context of Auction Mar

ket Theory, the concept of Fair Value is not a static number, but rather a zone where the highest volume of an asset has been traded over a specific period. Professional market participants view price action as a constant transition from a state of balance to a state of imbalance. When the market is in balance, a high-density volume distribution area is formed, at the center of which lies a key reference point: the Point of Control (POC). Understanding this concept allows a trader not just to follow the chart, but to see where institutional players deem a price justified and where they consider it overpriced or undervalued.

POC as the Foundation of Value

The Point of Control (POC) is the price level where the maximum trading volume was recorded within a selected time profile. From the perspective of market logic, this is the center of mass for the auction. If price spends a significant amount of time at a specific level and a massive number of trades occur there, it means that both sides—bulls and bears—agree that the current quote is fair at that moment. The POC acts as a powerful psychological and technical magnet. In range-bound conditions, the price tends to gravitate back to the POC, as this is where maximum liquidity is concentrated. For a professional analyst, the POC is the primary baseline: trading above this level during consolidation signals a temporary overvaluation of the asset, while trading below it indicates undervaluation.

The Structure of the Value Area

Fair Value is visualized not just through a single POC line, but also through the so-called Value Area. According to normal distribution rules, the Value Area (VA) encompasses approximately 70 percent of the total traded volume for a session or period. This is the range in which market participants feel most comfortable. The boundaries of this zone—Value Area High (VAH) and Value Area Low (VAL)—serve as dynamic support and resistance levels. When the price leaves the bounds of the VA, it exits the comfort zone. If the market fails to find support outside these borders, it inevitably reverts inside the fairness zone toward the POC. It is the interaction of price with the POC and the VA boundaries that determines the nature of the current market phase: accumulation, distribution, or an impulsive breakout.

Mechanics of Fair Value Discovery

The market cycle always begins with the formation of a POC and a Value Area. As soon as new fundamental information emerges or smart money begins aggressive buying, the price breaks out of balance. This process is called the search for a new fair value. If the price sustains above the previous VA zone, it signifies an acceptance of new prices by market participants. In this case, the POC begins to shift upward, forming a new base for further movement. If the price moves outside the boundaries but quickly retreats, we are dealing with a rejection. Trading through the lens of the POC allows one to distinguish a true trend breakout from a false, manipulative move based on liquidity grabs outside the Fair Value zone.

Practical Application of POC in Trading

Using the POC as an analytical tool requires an understanding of context. In a trending move, the POC often acts as a stepping stone: each new platform with maximum volume serves as a support zone from which one can look for entries in the direction of the impulse. Professionals pay special attention to Naked POCs—these are control levels from past periods to which the price has not yet returned.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
