The Protected High/Low Concept in Market Structure Analysis

In market structure analysis, understanding price action is key to successful trading. The market constantly forms highs and lows, and the ability to distinguish their significance is a fundamental skill. The Protected High/Low concept lies at the heart of understanding the true direction of the market and allows traders to make more informed decisions by filtering out market noise.

What is a Protected High/Low? A Protected High is a swing high that is expected to hold without being breached before price continues its move downward. Similarly, a Protected Low is a swing low that is expected to hold without being breached before price continues its move upward. These levels serve as critical points on the chart where a strong price reaction is expected if the current trend is to continue. Identifying them helps establish the boundaries of the price range in which the market is moving.

The Importance of Protected Levels

Correct identification of protected highs and lows is of paramount importance. It allows traders to accurately identify the current trend, distinguish true reversals from pullbacks, and avoid false signals. These levels act as clear invalidation points for placing stop-losses, significantly improving risk management and the risk/reward ratio. Understanding which level is protected helps determine which boundary of the Dealing Range price is most likely to target, making trade setups easier to form.

Identifying Protected Levels

Identifying protected swings requires attention to candle structure and interaction with liquidity. There are two main ways to define them:

Based on Liquidity Sweeps and candle closes: In bullish conditions, if price dips below a short-term low (sweeps liquidity) and then closes above the series of lower-high candles that formed this low, that low is confirmed as protected. In bearish conditions, if price rises above a short-term high and then closes below the series of higher-low candles that formed this high, it becomes protected.

Based on Fair Value Gaps (FVG): If price enters an FVG and then closes above (for bullish) or below (for bearish) the series of candles that created the corresponding low or high, this also confirms the level as protected.

The key point is the body close of the candle beyond a specific confirmation level, rather than just a wick penetration. This process is often referred to as a Change in State of Delivery (CISD), which signals a structural shift or a trend continuation.

Application in Trading

Protected highs and lows are the cornerstone of strategic trading:

Determining Trend Direction: In an uptrend, each new protected low confirms the strength of the bullish move. In a downtrend, each new protected high confirms the bearish direction.

Stop-Loss Placement: Stop-losses should be placed behind protected levels, as their breach signals a change in market structure and, potentially, the invalidation of your trade idea.

Identifying Entry Points: Trade entries can be sought on pullbacks to key levels, such as order blocks or FVG, provided that the protected level remains intact.

Confirming Reversals: A breach of a protected high/low (Market Structure Shift, MSS or Change of Character, ChoCH) may signal a potential trend reversal.

Protected High in a Downtrend

In a downtrend, price forms a series of lower highs and lower lows.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
