Trading from Linear Regression Channel Boundaries on a 15-Minute Chart

The Essence of the Method on the Chart

Intraday trading requires a balance between signal accuracy and formation speed. The M15 timeframe represents the optimal compromise: it

is cleared of the noise found on one-minute charts while providing sufficient intraday opportunities. The linear regression channel serves as a useful guide here. Unlike moving averages, it is built using the least squares method. The tool determines the average price for a period and projects a trend line with deviation boundaries. For a short-term trader, this is a ready-made dynamic map of support and resistance.

Setting Up the Technical Tool

To work effectively on M15, it is important to configure the indicator correctly. A traditional channel consists of a centerline and two boundaries set at a distance of the standard deviation. It is recommended to use a deviation coefficient of two. According to statistical laws, the price spends about 95% of its time within such a corridor. The construction period should be tailored to the asset, but a range of 100 to 150 candles (one to two trading days) is optimal for M15. This allows you to capture current trends without overloading the chart with excessive historical data.

Rules for Opening Positions

The essence of the strategy is to look for reversals when the price reaches extreme zones. Touching the lower boundary provides a buy signal, while touching the upper one indicates a sell. However, entering blindly with limit orders upon a touch is risky. A balanced approach requires confirmation: the price should not just touch the line but also demonstrate a reaction. It is advisable to wait for a reversal pattern (such as a pin bar) on the M15 and for the candle to close back inside the channel. This helps reduce the probability of entering against a strong trend momentum.

Filtering False Signals

The main danger of trading from boundaries is a channel breakout, which signals the beginning of a strong trend. Additional filters help avoid false entries. A good solution is the Relative Strength Index (RSI). If the RSI is in the overbought zone (above 70) when the price touches the upper boundary and then turns downward, the reliability of the signal increases. If the price approaches the boundary but the oscillator is neutral, it is better to refrain from trading, as the market may continue to move along the boundary (price creeping without a reversal).

Risk Management and Profit Taking

The success of the system depends on risk control. A stop-loss should be placed outside the local extreme formed at the boundary touch, with a buffer of a few pips. There are two approaches to taking profit. A conservative one involves closing the position upon reaching the channel centerline, which acts as a balance zone. A more moderate approach focuses on holding the trade until the opposite boundary. On M15, a reasonable compromise is to take partial profit at the middle line and move the remainder to break-even.

Strategy Recommendations

The linear regression method on M15 shows good results in moderately trending or ranging markets. During major news releases, channel boundaries are easily broken, so trading should be paused thirty minutes before and after the publication of statistics. Remember that the regression channel repaints: its boundaries adjust with each new candle. For this reason, it is recommended to use only closed candles for decision-making. Systematic adherence to these rules minimizes the influence of emotions.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
