Multi-MA Trend Score Indicator

In modern financial trading, traders frequently encounter the issue of false signals when relying on single indicators. The standard Moving Average (MA), while a classic tool, often suffers from lag or generates exce

ssive noise during periods of consolidation. The solution is the Trend Score concept—a sophisticated analytical tool that aggregates data from multiple moving averages to provide an objective assessment of market conditions. This approach turns qualitative observation into a quantitative metric, which is crucial for building robust trading systems.

Multi-Period Trend Analysis Concept

The essence of the Trend Score indicator is that it does not attempt to guess price direction based on a single line; rather, it evaluates the confluence between various time horizons. The algorithm is based on a simple but effective idea: if short-term, medium-term, and long-term moving averages all point in the same direction, the probability of price continuation is significantly higher. An analyst evaluates a set of 5 to 10 averages (e.g., periods of 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200). Each acts as a voting participant. The more MAs that confirm the current price direction, the higher the final Trend Score.

Mathematical Model and Scoring

Trend Score is calculated using a weighting system or binary scoring. In the simplest version, for every MA below the current price, the indicator assigns +1 point (for a bullish trend), and for every MA above the price, it assigns -1 point (for a bearish trend). The total value is normalized, for example, in a range from -10 to +10, or expressed as a percentage from 0 to 100%. Advanced models use Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) as they react more quickly to volatility shifts. In these models, weights can be distributed unevenly: long-term periods (like the 200 EMA) may carry more weight because they define the global market context, while short-term MAs handle local momentum.

Interpreting Values and Strength Zones

Interpreting the Trend Score requires an understanding of market phases. If the indicator value is in the extreme high zone (e.g., +8 or higher), it indicates a strong, established uptrend. However, for a professional analyst, this is also a signal of potential overbought conditions and the need to tighten stop-loss orders. Conversely, values near zero indicate a lack of clear direction—a phase of accumulation or distribution where trend-following strategies stop working effectively. A crossover of the zero line from bottom to top is considered an early signal of a paradigm shift from bearish to bullish, confirmed by the mass of moving averages.

Practical Application in Trading Strategies

The primary advantage of the Trend Score is trade filtering. A trader can set a rule to open long positions only when the Trend Score exceeds +5. This ensures that the trade is taken in the direction of the primary market flow. Furthermore, the indicator works excellently as a tool for partial position scaling. If the score drops from +10 to +6, a trader may take some profit, recognizing that short-term averages have begun to pivot, signaling a loss of momentum. When combined with oscillators like the RSI, the Trend Score helps identify divergences: if the price sets a new high while the Trend Score begins to decline, it is a clear sign of buyer exhaustion.

Advantages Over Classical Indicators

The main distinction of the Trend Score compared to standard indicators is its resilience against market noise.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
