Up/Down Volume Indicator

Understanding the nature of market volume

In the modern market environment, trading volume is considered one of the few leading indicators capable of shedding light on future price movements. While most technical tools r

ely solely on price derivatives, volume reflects the genuine interest of market participants and the amount of capital deployed. However, the classic volume histogram often obscures important details by presenting only the total sum of trades per period. The Up/Down Volume indicator solves this problem by splitting aggregate activity into two key components. This allows the trader to look inside the market mechanism and understand which side—buyers or sellers—is displaying more aggression at any given moment.

Up/Down Volume calculation mechanics

The principle behind this tool is based on comparing the current bar close to the previous bar close. If the current price is higher than the previous one, the entire volume for that period is classified as Up Volume. Otherwise, it is labeled as Down Volume. In more advanced versions of the indicator running on intraday charts, the calculation can be performed based on tick data: every trade executed at a price higher than the previous one (uptick) is added to the up flow, and every trade at a lower price (downtick) is added to the down flow. This approach provides a more granular understanding of dynamics, allowing for the visualization of supply and demand pressure in the form of two separate or stacked histograms.

Interpreting trading momentum strength

For a professional analyst, the key importance lies not in the mere presence of volume, but in its structure. The prevalence of Up Volume during a rising price chart indicates a healthy bull trend where buyers are willing to sweep the offer at increasingly higher prices. However, if the price continues to rise while Up Volume readings start to decline, this serves as a serious warning of potential momentum loss. Similarly, the dominance of Down Volume against a backdrop of falling quotes confirms bear strength. The true value of the indicator is revealed at climax moments: abnormally high spikes in Up Volume at the top of an upward move often signal the final stage of buying amid euphoria, which is usually followed by a deep correction or a reversal.

Confirming level breakouts

One of the most effective strategies for using Up/Down Volume is filtering trading signals when breaking support and resistance levels. False breakouts are the main challenge for traders who trade by levels. The indicator helps minimize risks by providing confirmation. If the price clears a resistance level against a backdrop of surging Up Volume, it indicates the presence of institutional demand capable of supporting new positions. In a situation where a breakout occurs on low Up Volume or, even more dangerously, on high Down Volume (which suggests hidden selling from the level), the probability of the price pulling back into the range is extremely high.

Identifying hidden reversal signals

Divergence between price and volume structure is a classic signal for looking for an entry point in the opposite direction. In the context of Up/Down Volume, the analyst looks for situations where a new local price high is not confirmed by a new high in Up Volume. This indicates that major players have stopped supporting the move, and the market is moving on inertia due to retail participants. Special attention should be paid to consolidation phases.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
