Using the Arnaud Legoux Moving Average (ALMA) for Entry Precision

The Arnaud Legoux Moving Average (ALMA) is an innovative technical analysis tool developed by Arnaud Legoux and Dimitrios Kouzis-Loukas in 2009 to overcome the inherent flaws of trad

itional moving averages. Unlike the Simple Moving Average (SMA) and Exponential Moving Average (EMA), ALMA utilizes a Gaussian distribution to weight price data, allowing it to provide both high sensitivity and exceptional smoothness. This approach significantly reduces indicator lag and filters out market noise, making ALMA particularly valuable for traders aiming for high precision in identifying trade entries.

ALMA Advantages

The main advantage of ALMA lies in its ability to minimize the lag characteristic of SMAs and smooth out price fluctuations better than EMAs, which often generate fakeouts in volatile markets. Thanks to Gaussian filtering, ALMA places more weight on the most relevant prices in the middle of the calculation window, rather than just the most recent prices or weighing all prices equally. This results in a clearer trend representation without excessive sensitivity to short-term noise, which is critical for making timely and well-informed decisions. ALMA is effective across various timeframes and asset classes, including stocks, forex, commodities, and cryptocurrencies.

Precise Entry Points

Using ALMA to identify precise entry points is based on several strategies. The most common approach is tracking price crossovers with the ALMA line. A buy signal occurs when the price closes above an ascending ALMA line, confirming the start or continuation of a bullish trend. Conversely, a sell signal is formed when the price closes below a descending ALMA line, indicating bearish momentum.

Another effective strategy is using pullbacks to the ALMA as a dynamic support or resistance level. In an uptrend, when the price pulls back to the ALMA and bounces off it, this can be an ideal long entry point, as the ALMA acts as strong support. Similarly, in a downtrend, if the price bounces off the ALMA to the downside, it serves as a sell signal. These “bounces” signal the continuation of the current trend and offer entries with relatively low risk.

Additionally, you can apply a double ALMA crossover strategy using different periods, such as a short (ALMA 9) and a long (ALMA 21). The faster ALMA crossing above the slower one indicates strengthening bullish momentum and a potential long entry. A downward crossover, accordingly, signals bearish pressure.

Parameter Optimization

For maximum efficiency, ALMA has three key customizable parameters: length, offset, and sigma.

Length: Determines the number of price bars used for the calculation. Short periods (e.g., 9 or 14) make ALMA more sensitive to recent price action, which is suitable for scalping and short-term trading. Long periods (e.g., 50 or 100) provide a smoother line, better suited for swing trading and long-term analysis.

Offset: Regulates the position of the Gaussian filter, shifting the focus to earlier or later data. The standard value is usually between 0.85 and 0.95, which shifts the weighting toward recent prices, increasing responsiveness. A value of 1.0 shifts the focus entirely to the current price, while 0.0 focuses on older data.

Sigma: Controls the width of the Gaussian curve, affecting the smoothness of the line. The typical value is 6.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
