Using the Pivot Point indicator across different timeframes

The Pivot Point indicator is a classic technical analysis tool based on the mathematical calculation of the weighted average price from the previous period. Unlike oscillators or moving

averages, Pivots are leading indicators, as they plot support and resistance levels before the trading session even begins. This makes them indispensable for identifying key zones where a shift in market sentiment or a deep correction is highly likely to occur. Professional market participants value this tool for its objectivity: calculations are based on actual High, Low, and Close data, which eliminates subjectivity when charting.

Varieties and calculation logic

There are several modifications of the indicator: Classic, Fibonacci, Woodie, and Camarilla. The traditional formula calculates the central pivot point (PP) as the arithmetic mean of the previous period’s high, low, and closing prices. Resistance (R1, R2, R3) and support (S1, S2, S3) levels are then plotted around it. R1 and S1 are usually viewed as the immediate targets following a breakout of the central line, while R2 and S2 are considered zones of extreme overbought or oversold conditions. The choice of a specific methodology depends on the asset’s volatility. For example, Camarilla levels work better in tight, ranging markets, while Fibonacci Pivots are effective during strong trend moves.

Intraday trading on M5-H1

For traders operating intraday (scalping, day trading), Daily Pivots are the most relevant. They are calculated based on data from the previous trading day. If the price opens above the central PP level, it signals a bullish bias. In this scenario, traders look for long entries on pullbacks to the PP level or upon a breakout of R1. On M5 and M15 timeframes, these levels serve as excellent markers for setting tight stop-losses. It is important to remember that during high-impact macroeconomic data releases, the price may ignore first-order levels, aiming straight for R3 or S3, which signals a buying or selling climax.

Mid-term strategies on H4

Swing traders use Weekly Pivots to analyze H4 and D1 charts. These levels remain static throughout the trading week, allowing for position planning several days in advance. The Weekly PP acts as a magnet or the equilibrium price for the week. If an asset holds above the weekly PP on Monday, the primary bias remains bullish for the rest of the five-day period. The advantage of working on H4 is that Pivot levels often coincide with significant horizontal levels from previous months, creating strong resistance zones where institutional players begin to take substantial profits.

Global analysis on higher timeframes

Investors and position traders focus on Monthly and Yearly Pivot points. On daily and weekly charts, these lines define the long-term vector of capital movement. A breakout of the yearly central level often marks a global trend shift that lasts for several quarters. In an investment approach, S2 and S3 levels on monthly timeframes are considered deep discount zones, where it is advantageous to accumulate long positions in high-quality assets. Using such large-scale levels helps filter out market noise and focus on fundamentally driven changes in asset value.

The nesting doll principle and confluence

The indicator demonstrates maximum efficiency when using the concept of confluence. When a daily R1 level coincides with a weekly PP level, such a zone carries double the strength. Traders refer to this as a level cluster.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
