The Volume Profile indicator for identifying key levels

The nature of horizontal volume

In classic technical analysis, traders are accustomed to relying on vertical volume, which displays the number of trades executed over a specific timeframe.

Fees are the silent killer of any trading strategy. To squeeze every drop of profit from your moves, you need a platform with minimal costs. I recommend MEXC: https://promote.mexc.com/r/aep0hTSdh1 #ad

However, this approach does not answer the main question: at exactly which price level did the primary battle between buyers and sellers take place? The Volume Profile indicator solves this problem by distributing volume horizontally along the price scale. This allows you to visualize zones of maximum interest from whales and levels that the market considers fair or, conversely, ignores. Understanding where capital is accumulated gives a trader an undeniable edge, turning chaotic chart movements into a logical structure of liquidity distribution.

Anatomy of the indicator: POC and VA

To work effectively with the profile, you must master its basic components. The key element is the Point of Control (POC)—the price level where the highest number of contracts or lots were traded during the selected period. It is a sort of market center of gravity where supply and demand were in maximum equilibrium. The next important component is the Value Area (VA), which typically encompasses 70 percent of the total traded volume. The boundaries of this zone, Value Area High (VAH) and Value Area Low (VAL), act as dynamic support and resistance levels. When the price is within the VA, the market is in a state of balance. A breakout beyond these limits signals the start of a trend impulse and the search for a new fair value zone.

High and low volume nodes

When analyzing the profile histogram, protrusions and troughs are clearly visible. High Volume Nodes (HVN) represent price levels where market participants spent a lot of time and executed a huge number of trades. These zones act as magnets: the price often slows down, consolidates, or reverses within them. Conversely, Low Volume Nodes (LVN) are zones of emptiness or price rejection. The market moves through these areas very quickly because there is no liquidity or interest from institutional players at these levels. A breakout through an LVN is often accompanied by a sharp impulse, as the lack of resistance allows the price to reach the next significant HVN instantly.

Strategies for working with levels

The practical application of the Volume Profile is based on finding entry points when the price interacts with key nodes. One of the most reliable strategies is trading the bounce from the boundaries of the value area during sideways movement. If the price approaches the VAL from below and fails to consolidate above it, this is a signal to look for short positions with the POC as the target. Another effective method is working with traded shelves. When the price returns to an old POC after a long absence, this level often acts as a massive barrier. Institutional players tend to defend their positions at the exact levels where maximum volume was previously formed, which creates ideal conditions for placing tight stop-losses behind the volume clusters.

The logic of price movement

The Volume Profile is not just a mathematical formula, but a reflection of auction psychology. The market is constantly moving from a state of balance (volume accumulation) to a state of imbalance (trending to the next level). If the current day’s POC is higher than the previous one, we are observing a bullish shift in value. If the profile takes the shape of the letter P, it often indicates profit-taking at the top of the range and a potential reversal. A b shape suggests pressure from sellers. By understanding the context of profile formation, a trader stops reacting to fakeouts, focusing instead on real volume rather than derivative price indicators.

Great insights! I've been looking for something like this setup for a while. Definitely stealing the configuration.

Have you tried using Raycast instead of Spotlight alongside these? It replaced half of my menubar apps!
